The Scandal: Journalists / private investigators working for News International, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp (owner of Fox in the USA, and The Sun and The Times newspapers in the UK) hacked into the phones of politicians, celebrities and ordinary people caught in the media spotlight, to get stories.
The London Metropolitan Police then failed to investigate this properly despite complaints from those hacked, because they supposedly had a too close relationship with News International. Allegations that police officers were paid tens of thousands of pounds by News of the World. Politicians of both parties were too happy to play along with News International because they feared Murdoch's power - culminating in a former editor of NOTW, who resigned over phone hacking allegations, getting full security clearance to work for the Prime Minister as his head of communications.... read more
