Earlier today Milly’s mother Sally told the Leveson Inquiry how she had repeatedly called her daughter’s phone in the weeks after she vanished in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in March 2002.
“At first we were able to leave messages, and then her voicemail became full and then you rang and then you just got the recorded 'you are unable to leave messages at the moment'," she said.
She then described her elation when she finally got through to her daughter's recorded message, telling the inquiry: "I rang her phone. It clicked through on to her voicemail, so I heard her voice and it was just like, 'she's picked up her voicemail, she's alive'."
This afternoon the law firm Payne Hicks Beach released a statement on behalf of Mulcaire in which he expressed his “sincere personally sympathy for the Dowler family” and denied deleting the messages.
“Because of the ongoing criminal investigation it is not possible for him to say much at this time,” the statement said.
“However he fully supports the recent agreement by Surrey Police to disclose relevant documents form 2002 concerning voicemail interception of Milly Dowler’s phone.
“He is confident that they will shed light on the actions he took then and the basis of them.
“Further, he confirms that he did not delete messages and had no reason to do so.”
