The Chancellor, George Osborne has joined the Prime Minister in expressing regret over hiring Andy Coulson as Director of Communications at Downing Street, writes the Daily Telegraph.
The admission comes as Number 10 faces increasing pressure to be more transparent about the relationship between News International and the heart of government.
As he faced the Commons last week, the Prime Minister promised more transparency from Downing Street. But so far both the PM and the Chancellor have continued to frustrate efforts to get straight answers regarding their ties to Rupert Murdoch.
The Chancellor refused yesterday to say if he discussed the BSkyB bid at a dinner he had with Rupert Murdoch on 17 December of last year, in New York.
